Register Now for 2017 Living With Mental Illness and Addiction Conference in Cape Breton

Registration is now open to the public for a free annual conference in Cape Breton that helps people understand living with mental illness and addiction.

Living with Mental Illness and Addiction takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney. The conference is organized by the Family Working Group, a partnership between the Nova Scotia Health Authority’s mental health and addictions, families of people with mental illness and addiction and community organizations.

“The Family Working Group is committed to helping people increase their understanding of mental health and substance use disorders by providing first voice stories, information and education.” says Sharon MacKenzie, Manager with Mental Health and Addictions. “We need to dive into these incredible important issues and hear the stories of people whose lives are impacted.”

The 2017 keynote speaker is Kevin Breel. His talk, “Confessions of a Depressed Comic”, has garnered more than four million views, making it one of the most watched TED talks ever on mental health and depression. His honest and humorous take on his first-hand experience with depression, and his message of ending the stigma around mental illness once and for all, resonates with all of his audiences.

An expo will be held throughout the day with information on local services.

Conference organizers encourage people living with mental illness and/or addiction, their friends and family, as well as staff and agencies who provide care, or any person who wants to improve their mental health to register.

Registration is free. Seating is limited. To register, please visit https://sharethejourney.eventbrite.ca. If you do not have access to a computer please call 902-563-8637.
