Canadian hospital and medical services are excellent, but a hospital visit can be costly.
If you are not a Canadian Citizen, you will not be refused treatment, but you will be responsible for the cost of your care.
South Shore Health charges for a variety of services based on a cost-recovery model. Fees are subject to change without notice.
Please note that the fees are in Canadian Funds and may be higher if special services, high-cost procedures, or drugs are used.
You will also be charged a fee for accessing your health record. Fees vary.
If you are admitted to hospital, you will be charged a daily rate. This standard rate includes your room and most services provided by the hospital and our staff including:
- drugs and tests
- blood work
Doctors’ fees are NOT included in these rates. Doctors are self-employed and do not work for the hospital. You will be billed directly by the doctor.
Telephone and television services are also the patient’s responsibility.
There are 3 types of rooms available to patients. We try to provide you with the accommodations you have requested. However, private and semi-private rooms are not always available.

Your health insurance may cover some of your costs. Insurance coverage varies. It is important that you understand what your private insurance does and does not cover.
Some policies limit the number of days for which they will pay, some limit the daily rate and some do not pay costs associated with certain types of treatment. We recommend you phone your insurer to confirm the extent of your coverage. It is not the hospital's responsibility to do this.
You must provide the full details of your insurance coverage to the hospital at the time you are admitted.
The Patient is responsible for payment of any amounts not paid by insurance, including cases where the Insurer denies the claim. Payment may be made by cheque, cash, Visa, Mastercard, Interac or American Express.
*Please note: South Shore Health does not bill insurance companies directly for outpatient services. You are responsible for making arrangements to pay your bill for outpatient services before leaving the hospital.
*Exceptions may apply for International High School Students covered by Ingle Insurance.
