Accessing Community Nursing

There are a number of community nursing services provided to Nova Scotians of all ages who need help with care in their homes and communities.

There is no fee for nursing services authorized through Continuing Care.

Our skilled health care professionals/case managers working in hospital and community settings will help you and your families explore home/community nursing options that will achieve and/or maintain maximum independence. Based on your assessed needs services will be arranged.

Menu of Services

  • Palliative Care - pain and symptom management, end-of-life care and caregiver respite for patients requiring nursing care
  • IV Therapy
  • Hypodermocyclis
  • TPN
  • CADD pump analgesic administration
  • CADD Prizm pump intermittent administration
  • Central line care
  • Blood transfusions
  • Venipuncture and specimen collection in special situations, i.e. palliative care
  • Bowel care
  • Bladder care
  • Ostomy care and teaching
  • Acute and Chronic Wound Care
  • Wound Care Resource Nurse available in each branch
  • VAC dressings
  • Suture and staple removal
  • Gastrostomy care
  • Nephrostomy care
  • Medication Management- administration and preparation
  • Caregiver and patient teaching
  • Health assessment
  • Reinforcement of physiotherapy exercises
  • Application of orthopedic splints and braces
  • Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis - dressing changes, cycler
